Understanding greywater

Greywater is the gently used water from baths, showers, basins and laundry. Treated as a concept rather than a project, it is one of the clearest illustrations of household water flows.

What counts as greywater

Greywater is wastewater that has not contacted toilet waste or, in most definitions, kitchen waste. Showers, hand basins and the laundry are the usual sources. It is distinct from blackwater (toilet and, often, kitchen water), which carries far higher contamination and is handled entirely differently.

The appeal is simple arithmetic: a large share of indoor water use leaves as greywater, and much of it could, in principle, be redirected to uses that do not need drinking-quality water — chiefly garden irrigation. The principles below explain why that redirection is bounded by health and environmental limits.

Safe-reuse principles

Greywater is reusable in concept but perishable in practice. Untreated, it should be used quickly — typically within a day — because the organic load lets bacteria multiply if it is stored. It is generally directed below the surface or under mulch rather than sprayed, kept away from edible parts of plants, and matched to detergents low in salt and phosphorus so soils are not degraded over time.

This module explains greywater concepts only. It does not describe how to plumb, divert or treat greywater. Reuse systems are regulated and vary by state and council; design and installation are tasks for licensed professionals working to local rules.

Environmental considerations

What goes down the drain ends up in soil. Sodium from some detergents can break down soil structure; phosphorus can over-feed waterways if it escapes; surfactants vary in how readily they break down. The environmental case for greywater therefore depends as much on what is washed into it as on the volume reused. Low-sodium, low-phosphorus products and surface-protecting application turn a waste stream into a modest, low-risk garden resource.
