Keeping a system working
A rainwater system is mostly passive, but it is not maintenance-free. A short, seasonal routine keeps water clean and the hardware doing its job for decades.
The maintenance loop
Gutters & screens
Clear leaf litter before the wet season so runoff reaches the tank and screens keep pests out.
First-flush
Empty and check the diverter so the dirtiest runoff keeps bypassing storage.
Inlet & overflow
Confirm screens are intact — the main defence against mosquitoes and debris.
Sediment
Periodically check the base; desludge only when build-up is significant, disturbing it as little as possible.
Pumps & fittings
Listen and look for leaks, cycling or corrosion at connections.
Roof
Trim overhanging branches that drop leaves and shade the catchment.
A seasonal rhythm
Maintenance maps naturally onto the calendar. The most valuable single habit is clearing gutters and screens before the main rains, so the first heavy fall is captured cleanly rather than carrying a season of debris into the tank. After bushfire smoke or heavy leaf-fall, an extra inlet check pays for itself. Sediment removal is rare — often years apart — and should be gentle, since the settled layer at the base is normally harmless if left undisturbed.
Most faults announce themselves: overflowing gutters, a tank that fills slower than it used to, or insects at the inlet. Treat those as signals to inspect the upstream part of the chain rather than the tank itself.
Why upkeep protects quality
Almost every water-quality problem in a rainwater system traces back to a maintenance lapse upstream: a blocked first-flush, a torn screen, a gutter packed with rotting leaves. Maintenance and quality are therefore the same subject viewed twice.
