Rainwater quality concepts
Rainwater starts clean and is contaminated on the way down and in storage. Understanding where quality is lost explains why most quality measures target the roof and the inlet, not the tank itself.
Where purity is lost
The roof
Dust, pollen, leaf litter, bird and animal droppings accumulate between rains and wash off in the first flush.
Air & roof material
Atmospheric particulates and, on some older roofs, surface coatings can influence runoff chemistry.
Storage
Light, warmth and organic debris allow growth; sediment settles and should be left undisturbed at the base.
Rain itself is close to distilled. Almost all of what we call “rainwater quality” is acquired after the drop leaves the cloud — which is good news, because the roof and inlet are the parts of the system we can most easily manage.
Storage hygiene
A healthy tank is dark, screened and undisturbed. Excluding light suppresses algae; excluding leaves and insects with inlet and overflow screens suppresses both contamination and mosquitoes. Sediment naturally settles to the floor and is best left there — drawing water from above the base, rather than the bottom, keeps that sediment out of supply.
Whether stored rainwater is safe to drink depends on the catchment, the system, treatment and local guidance. This reference does not certify any water as potable. For garden, laundry and toilet use, the hygiene principles above are the main concern; for drinking, seek qualified advice.
When filtration matters
Filtration is a graded idea, not a single product. Coarse screening at the inlet handles leaves; first-flush diversion handles the dirtiest runoff; finer treatment — sediment filters, and disinfection for potable use — sits further down the line and is matched to the intended use. The logic is to remove the easy contamination cheaply and early, and reserve intensive treatment for water that genuinely needs it.
